Foulis Castle is the home of Clan Munro
Foulis Castle (pronounced FOWLS and Gaelic for streamlet) is situated two miles south-west of Evanton in the parish of Kiltearn, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland.
Interestingly, the remains of an 11th century Motte (a man-made mound topped by a wooden palisade), believed to be the first fortification at Foulis have been found through archaeology and still remain on the castle grounds to this day.
While the original Tower of Foulis is believed to have been built in the early 12th century, it is first recorded in evidence as a charter granted to Robert de Munro, 8th Baron of Foulis by the Earl of Ross from 1350. There are no surviving plans or sketches of what the original Foulis Castle looked like, however existing documents such as one signed in 1491 and written in Gaelic describe Foulis as “castle gaunt-peaked, the eagle’s nest” and a charter from the crown in 1587 refers to the castle’s “tower and fortalice”.
Foulis Castle was destroyed by fire, during a raid by Clan Mackenzie Jacobites during the Jacobite Rising of 1745-46. Sir Robert Munro, 6th Baronet of Foulis and his younger brother Dr Duncan Munro were killed at the Battle of Falkirk while fighting for the government forces in the English 37th Regiment of Foot, of which Sir Robert was the Colonel. Sir Robert’s son, Sir Harry Munro, having served in Loudon’s Highlanders had been captured at the Battle of Prestopans, and was released in January 1746, returning to Foulis to see it in ruins.
Sir Harry Munro, 7th Baronet of Foulis set about building the Foulis Castle that you see standing today. He incorporated what he could of the remaining 16th century keep but no longer needing a defensive fort, he rebuilt Foulis Castle with its semi-octagonal tower dated 1754 hinting at an earlier form of Scottish architecture, whilst the overall effect of the range of l8th domestic buildings, coach houses, laundry, bakehouse, stables and well, shows a strong continental influence. The slightly later and more formal Georgian front features a fine double entrance stair leading to a doorway formed from a first floor window in the pedimented centre piece with its heraldic panel dated 1777.
Today, Foulis Castle externally remains much as it was built in the 1700s, with the interior having been extensively refurbished in the 70s and 80s and is still in the ownership of the Munro of Foulis family.
